'Fantastic Beasts' stumbles into #1 spot at box office

It's not surprising the newest addition to the Fantastic Beasts franchise is number one. What's shocking is that it did so with such a bad experience.

According to Box Office Mojo, The Crimes of Grindelwald conjured up $62 million in its opening weekend - just shy of the $65 million expectation from Warner Bros. That's $13 million less than the debut of 2016's Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

The movie currently has a 40 percent critic score on Rotten Tomatoes. Like I said, there was no doubt Crimes would make money, but the rushed plot and small payoff make it feel like a desperate crash grab that only exists to set-up the next movie. You can read my full review here.

The Grinch stole second place. The latest rendition of the Dr. Seuss tale earned $38.2 million this weekend, while Bohemian Rhapsody finished its third week in third place - making an additional $15.7 million.

Rounding out the top 5 is Instant Family (I have literally not heard anything about this movie) and Widows, 4th and 5th place respectively.

Next week, we'll see if Ralph Breaks the Internet or Creed II snags the top spot.
