Say "Jordan Peele" five times in the mirror and see if a "woke" movie appears...
Jordan Peele will co-write a "spiritual sequel" to 1992's Candyman. Yes, the man who brought us the arguably best race-based horror movie in 2017's Get Out is taking on a classic horror movie based on racism.
In a partnership between MGM and Monkeypaw, Peele and Win Rosenfeld will take us back to the where we first met the hood boogeyman - a gentrified version of the neighborhood where that creepy housing projects crouched.
The original movie was based on a short story by horror legend Clive Barker called "The Forbidden". With Tony Todd (who I STILL can't look at without flinching) in the titular role, Candyman told the story of a vengeful spirit that stalked anyone dumb enough to say his name five times in the mirror. To this day, I hate mirrors and will NOT go into a dark bathroom.
“The original was a landmark film for black representation in the horror genre,” said Peele. “Alongside Night of the Living Dead, Candyman was a major inspiration for me as a filmmaker — and to have a bold new talent like Nia at the helm of this project is truly exciting. We are honored to bring the next chapter in the Candyman canon to life and eager to provide new audiences with an entry point to Clive Barker’s legend.”
This is the only horror movie that still terrifies me and I am excited to see what Peele will do with it. The success of 2018's Halloween proves these reboot-sequels can do well if you honor the source material (take notes Blair Witch).
Production for the reboot-sequel should start in Spring of next year. Universal Pictures will release the final product on June 12, 2020.
