Going into this weekend, I was confident Venom was going to tank; allowing Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper to mop up the box office. And yet, here we are.
The comic book antihero used its dumpster fire of a script and plot to set the theaters on fire, raking in $80 million in its opening weekend. Venom outpaces Gravity for the best October opening ever. The Sandra Bullock space film earned $55.7 million back in 2013.
Venom currently has a 32% on Rotten Tomatoes, but (surprisingly) audiences gave it 89%. Here's hoping they spawn a better product for the sequel. Carnage deserves nothing but the best.
If you missed it, you can read my review here.
Meanwhile, the latest A Star Is Born remake sang its way to a $41.3 million opening. Lady Gaga has been praised for her first starring role in a major production, although anyone who watched American Horror Story: Hotel could have told you as much. You can't say the title of the movie without being hit over the head with people saying, "YOU GET AN OSCAR, AND YOU GET AN OSCAR. EVERYONE GETS AN OSCAR".
I haven't seen Star yet (I know, I KNOW), but I'll write a review as soon as I do.
Rounding out this weekend's top 5 is:
3. Smallfoot - $14.9 million
4. Night School - $12.3 million
5. The House With a Clock in Its Walls - $7.3 million
